The kettlebell can be a great strength training tool, but to reap its benefits (and stay safe in the process), you need to know how to wield it correctly. This app offers 45-plus kettlebell exercises and five workout programs with a voice coach and high-def video demos to guide you along the way. We love a workout app because there’s very little downside to giving one a try. Most offer a free trial, which lets you explore the workouts, features, and overall vibe before committing. Compared to an in-person gym membership, fitness apps are typically more affordable, far more convenient, and they take the guesswork out of programming our own workouts.

Others can cost less than $10, under $50 or as much as $100 a month, depending on how personalized the experience tends to be. When I tried out this app, I signed up for a kettlebell class called Body & Bell, and what’s great is you get video demonstrations for the different exercises you’ll be doing. The videos also tell you the type of weight you should be using (light, medium, heavy) and the length of time of the exercise. You can also connect with your coach via the chat in the app if you ever have questions about your training or want to chat with other members on your team. We also appreciate apps that combine live and on-demand classes, with fresh content added regularly to keep your routine interesting. In the end, the “best” app comes down to what excites you, whether it’s a favorite instructor, a style of class you can’t get enough of, or a program that fits seamlessly into your schedule.

You filter out the workouts by the equipment you have as well as skills. The app is very easy to use, and Amanda rates it a 5 out of 5 in its ease of use. GGR staff writer Matt Dustin, CSCS, PN-1, has used this app for over six months and loves the tracking, ease of use, and ability to build your own custom training plan if you want. Caine is an Olympian, placing 9th in weightlifting at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Having competed in Olympic weightlifting for over two decades, Caine has amassed several national and international titles over the years, including being a three-time Pan American Champion.

It is designed to use minimal equipment, with resistance sessions from minutes in length that can be completed in the comfort of your own home and at your own pace. I assumed that exercising without weights would make the Sweat workouts less challenging than my usual gym-based sessions. However, most of the routines I tried via the app, including a 12-minute Pilates-style core workout and a 30-minute HIIT workout, had my muscles burning and my heart rate high. Free workout apps have great value, providing basic instructions with libraries of exercises and workouts at no cost to you.

Another good workout tracker is Hevy, which has a robust community of support where you can share your workouts and view, like and comment on others’ workouts. Across both programs, the workouts follow a clear, easy-to-follow format. Each exercise comes with a demo video and written form cues, which is especially helpful if you are trying new movements or training alone in the gym. You can log your weights as you go, track progress over time, and finish sessions with an optional cooldown, which is great when you have the time, but easy to skip when your lunch break is tight. Australian fitness influencer Kayla Itsines built a wildly popular exercise program—and a community of devout followers—with a series of 28-minute high-intensity workouts.

If there is a workout that you frequent, you can create it as a workout routine to simplify logging it in. In addition, Heavy provides some basic strength training routines of their own, such as 5 x 5 back squats. You can look at Hevy’s and other user’s workouts for inspiration, if you’re not sure what to do that day. Although the library of exercises is expansive, just be aware that the functionality is limited in the free version. Kate explains, “I entered all the movements for a weightlifting workout, but the app ordered them alphabetically instead of in the order I wanted.
